The Roblox Developers Conference (RDC) ran September 10-12, 2026, in San Jose. It is an event for game creators, so most of the news was about tools. A handful of announcements will change how kids actually play, though, and some of them matter to parents. Here is that list, with the timing Roblox gave for each one.
The short version
| Change | What Roblox said | Timing Roblox gave |
|---|---|---|
| Play in a browser | Join a game in Chrome from its page, no app install | By the end of 2026 |
| Offline play | Creators can add offline solo play next to multiplayer | Mid-2027; early access “coming soon” |
| Standalone game apps | Creators can release games as their own apps | “Soon”, no date |
| Quick Words | Pre-set phrases reviewed for policy compliance | Late 2026 |
| Pre-roll video ads | Short, skippable ads while a game loads | “Coming soon” |
| Friends chat tab | Chat with friends that follows you across games | Announced at RDC |
Roblox’s own footnote applies to all of it: what is available varies by age and region. Roadmap dates are targets, not promises.
Playing in a browser and offline
Roblox says that by the end of 2026, players will be able to start a game in the Chrome browser straight from the game’s details page, with no app or install. Other browsers are planned later. For families, this means a game link shared in a chat or on YouTube could open and run on a laptop where the Roblox app was never installed.
Offline play is further out. Roblox says creators will be able to turn on offline solo play alongside a normal online mode, and its developer roadmap lists mid-2027. Offline play is a choice each game’s creator makes, so not every game will support it.
Parent note: if you manage screen time through the Roblox app or app-store settings, check whether browser play is covered once it arrives. Settings made in a linked parent account sit on your child’s Roblox account, so keep that link in place.
Standalone apps for Roblox games
The headline for many players was that creators will be able to publish their games as standalone apps on mobile, PC and consoles, with Roblox providing the technology underneath. Roblox called this coming “soon” and did not name any games, stores or dates.
What that likely means for a family: a popular game might show up in an app store under its own name instead of only inside the Roblox app. Until Roblox publishes details, it is not known how accounts, Robux or parental controls will carry over to those apps. Treat any “download this Roblox game app” link on social media with care until the first ones are announced on roblox.com.
Chat, Quick Words and friends
Roblox announced a Friends chat tab that follows players from game to game, and voice typing for chat.
For younger players, the more useful item is Quick Words. Creators will be able to add pre-set phrases to their games, which Roblox reviews for policy compliance so that “players of all ages can coordinate” without free typing. It is listed for late 2026.
None of this replaces the chat age check. Chat still needs an age check, and chat for kids still depends on their account type. See our guides on the chat age check and Roblox Kids and Roblox Select.
Ads and subscriptions
Roblox told developers that pre-roll video ads are coming soon. These are short, skippable, mostly mobile video ads that play while a game loads, and creators earn from them. Roblox Plus subscribers will not see them. Roblox Plus is the monthly subscription that launched on April 30, 2026, at $4.99 USD per month.
Parent note: an ad on Roblox is not a prize. No ad gives Robux, and anyone claiming that watching ads earns Robux is running a scam (see why).
Also announced, mostly for creators
- Moments, the short gameplay-video feed, is now fully available in the US, depending on age and region. Roblox said players would be able to tap an avatar in Moments to buy items shown, starting in October.
- Roblox Wallet, a payout account for independent creators in the US aged 18 and older, is planned for late 2026.
- New 2D and puzzle game tools are in Studio Beta in October, with a full release by year’s end.
- If your child builds games, our Roblox Studio guide covers the basics.
Roblox also used RDC to mark its 20th anniversary. Our 20th anniversary page and The Hunt: Roblox 20 recap cover that side.
