Mojang is testing the fourth and final game drop of 2026, and it is all about cold caves. It adds an ice cave biome, two new blocks, a frozen zombie called the frostbite, and a Freezing effect. Nothing here is final yet, so this guide sticks to what Mojang has shown in its test builds and changelogs.

Short answer: As of October 10, 2026, the fourth drop has no name and no release date. Mojang is testing it in Java 26.4 snapshots and Bedrock 26.60 preview builds.

Where the fourth drop stands

Mojang showed the drop’s first look at Minecraft LIVE on September 26, 2026. Test builds have been rolling out on both editions around that date:

EditionTest buildDateWhat it added
Java26.4 Snapshot 1September 22, 2026Technical changes, Vulkan becomes the default graphics option
BedrockPreview 26.60.29September 30, 2026The drop’s content behind the “Drop 4 of 2026” experimental toggle
Java26.4 Snapshot 3October 6, 2026Ice caves, ice crystals, icicles, frostbite, Freezing

Mojang’s testing roundup calls it “the final game drop of 2026.” It has not given a name or a launch date. The Bedrock previews use 26.60 numbers, and Mojang has not said which version number the finished Bedrock update will have. Treat any exact date you see online as a guess until minecraft.net posts it.

Ice caves, ice crystals and icicles

The ice cave is a new cave biome that Mojang says generates under the colder Overworld biomes. It is made mostly of packed ice and calcite. Strays and frostbites can spawn there along with the usual cave mobs.

There is no glow lichen in ice caves. Light comes from ice crystals instead:

  • Ice crystals are a light-emitting block that works like an amethyst cluster. You can place them facing any direction, and they break if the block holding them is removed.
  • Icicles hang from cave ceilings and can grow up to 5 blocks long. They fall and hurt anything below, and they deal extra damage to anything that lands on them. They melt near light sources and break in the Nether.

That falling-icicle detail matters for younger players. A cave that looks pretty can drop sharp blocks on them, a lot like pointed dripstone does today.

The frostbite and the Freezing effect

The frostbite is a zombie variant built for the cold. In Java Snapshot 3 it:

  • Throws ice balls when you are far away and fights up close when you are near.
  • Gives you the new Freezing effect with its melee hits.
  • Drops rotten flesh and ice balls.
  • Turns back into a regular zombie if it stays underwater long enough.

Regular zombies and husks also turn into frostbites when they stand in powder snow. Freezing makes the player shake and then take damage. Leather armor helps, as it does with powder snow, but it does not stop the effect. Ice balls can also brew a Potion of Freezing, plus splash and lingering versions.

How to try it, and the parent note

On Java, open the Minecraft Launcher and turn on snapshots in the Installations tab. On Bedrock, previews run on Xbox, Windows 10 and 11, and iOS, while Android uses the Google Play beta. Realms subscribers can also make a free testing Realm.

Mojang’s own warning is the key point for families: testing versions can corrupt your world. Back up worlds first, or keep test builds in a separate save folder. If a child has a big build they care about, keep that world off the preview.

Minecraft is rated E10+ by the ESRB, and the frostbite is one more cartoon zombie, not a new kind of threat. Test builds come from the Minecraft Launcher or the Bedrock preview app. A website offering an “early download” of the ice update is not Mojang, and any page asking for a Microsoft account password is a scam. Our account security guide covers the warning signs, and they apply to Minecraft accounts too.

What came before it

The third drop, Wilderness Bound, came out on September 15, 2026. Our Wilderness Bound guide covers its dappled forest, abandoned camps and straw beds. For everything else shown at the same broadcast, including the Sift dimension planned for 2027, see our Minecraft Live September 2026 recap.

Frequently asked questions

When does the fourth Minecraft drop of 2026 come out?

Mojang has not announced a release date or a name yet. As of October 10, 2026, it is only in testing: Java 26.4 snapshots and Bedrock preview and beta builds.

Is the fourth drop Java 26.4?

Mojang's Java snapshots for it are numbered 26.4, so the Java release is expected to carry that number. The Bedrock previews are numbered 26.60, and Mojang has not said which number the final Bedrock release will use.

What is a frostbite in Minecraft?

It is a new zombie variant in the test builds. It throws ice balls from a distance, and its melee hits give you the new Freezing effect. Zombies and husks turn into frostbites when they stand in powder snow.

Can my child try the new drop now?

Yes, through Java snapshots or Bedrock preview and beta builds. Mojang warns that testing versions can corrupt worlds, so back up worlds first or use a separate save folder.
