Wilderness Bound is Minecraft’s third game drop of 2026, and it came out on September 15, 2026. It adds a colorful new forest, camps to explore, and a few cozy items for building and sleeping outdoors. This guide covers what changed, using Mojang’s own release notes for Java and Bedrock.
Release date and version numbers
| Edition | Version | Release date |
|---|---|---|
| Java Edition (Windows, Mac, Linux) | 26.3 | September 15, 2026 |
| Bedrock Edition (consoles, mobile, Windows) | 26.50 | September 15, 2026 |
Mojang first showed the forest at its TwitchCon Europe broadcast in May 2026, announced the Wilderness Bound name on September 5, and confirmed the date on September 10. Minecraft.net’s launch post says the drop is free with either edition, sold separately, and that online console play still needs the console’s own subscription.
The dappled forest and poplar trees
The biggest addition is the dappled forest, a new forest biome. The Java 26.3 changelog says it generates near cold biomes and fills with poplar trees in three leaf colors: red, orange and yellow. Each color drops matching falling-leaf particles, and poplar saplings grow into any of the three.
Other things you will find there:
- Poplar wood set: Poplar logs craft into a full set of building blocks, like other wood types.
- Shelf mushrooms: They grow on poplar trunks and fallen poplar trees. They bounce a little when you step on them, and they work in stews like other mushrooms. Bone meal grows a small one into a large one.
- Red shrubs: A decorative plant that keeps its red color when you place it in other biomes.
- Animals: Sheep, chickens, cows, pigs, rabbits and foxes spawn there, using their cold variants.
Abandoned camps and explorer maps
Abandoned camps are a new structure: a tent, a campfire and chests or barrels with loot. They are not only in the dappled forest. The changelog lists 18 biomes with their own camp design, including meadows, cherry groves, taigas, swamps, savannas and the pale garden.
Camps can hold new explorer maps. Some point to other abandoned camps. Others point to bigger structures, such as an ancient city, trial chambers, a mineshaft or a woodland mansion. For a child, a camp makes a good first goal on a new world, and our Minecraft beginner’s guide covers the basics of surviving the first nights.
Straw beds, cushions and new building blocks
| Item | How you get it | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Straw bed | 3 hay bales make 4 straw beds | Sleep through one night without changing your spawn point, then it breaks |
| Cushion | 3 wool slabs of the same color, or found in camps | Place it on a flat surface and sit on it, 16 colors |
| Wool stairs and slabs | Crafted from any wool color | Shapes for soft-looking builds, and they still dampen vibrations |
| Concrete stairs and slabs | Crafted from concrete, or a stonecutter | Shapes for builds in all 16 concrete colors |
A straw bed does not work in the Nether or the End. It breaks if you try. That is a good detail to mention to a young player before they carry one through a portal.
Smaller changes worth knowing
The Java 26.3 notes list a few extras beyond the forest:
- Realm owners can create invite codes, up to five for each one, with an expiry date. A friend types the code in a new “Join Realm” screen. Our Realms guide for parents explains why you should share codes only with people you know.
- Players in spectator mode can use portals.
- The game adds Gothic as a language option.
The Bedrock 26.50 changelog lists the same main additions plus its own fixes, such as bats spawning in every Overworld biome except the deep dark.
Parent note
Minecraft is rated E10+ by the ESRB. Wilderness Bound adds no new hostile mob, and the new items are building and comfort blocks. As with any update, watch for “Wilderness Bound mod” or “early access” downloads in video descriptions. The drop arrives through the normal game update, so nobody needs a file, a password or a payment to get it. If something asks for one, treat it as a scam and read our account security guide, whose advice on passwords and two-step sign-in applies to a Microsoft account too.

Frequently asked questions
When did Wilderness Bound come out?
Mojang released Wilderness Bound on September 15, 2026, on Java Edition and Bedrock Edition on the same day.
Which version numbers is Wilderness Bound?
It is Java Edition 26.3 and Bedrock Edition 26.50. Bedrock has had small fix updates since, so your game may show a slightly higher number.
Does Wilderness Bound cost extra?
No. Mojang says the drop is free for anyone who already owns Minecraft: Java Edition or Bedrock Edition. Online play on a console still needs that console's paid online subscription.
What does a straw bed do?
You craft 4 straw beds from 3 hay bales. A straw bed lets you sleep through the night without changing your spawn point, and it breaks after one use.
