The sequel to A Minecraft Movie has a name and a date. It is called A Minecraft Movie Squared, and Mojang says it arrives in theaters on July 23, 2027. This page lists what Mojang has confirmed and what is still unknown.
Title and release date
Mojang revealed the title during its Minecraft LIVE broadcast from TwitchCon Europe, recapped on minecraft.net on May 30, 2026. The release date came later, in Mojang’s July 10, 2026 post announcing the winner of the Minecraft Movie Build Challenge, which says the film “arrives in theaters on July 23, 2027.”

Release dates for films can move. We will treat July 23, 2027 as the plan until the studio or Mojang says otherwise.
Who is in the cast
According to the TwitchCon recap:
- Kirsten Dunst will play Alex, a character Minecraft players know as a default skin.
- Matt Berry returns, but in an undisclosed character. In the first film he played the Nitwit.
- Danielle Brooks hinted at new adventures and mobs.
- Jack Black and Jason Momoa appeared in the segment to welcome Dunst.
Mojang’s recap does not confirm every role from the first film, so we have not listed anyone it did not name.
The Minecraft Movie Build Challenge
Mojang and the filmmakers ran a build challenge for players to get a creation into the sequel. Mojang says more than 21,000 builders entered, the biggest community build challenge in Minecraft’s history.
- Grand prize: the Lightning Rod Lighthouse by Francisco C.M., a tundra-style build on a base of ice.
- Finalists: Copper Badlands Castle by Rosanna C. and Tranquil Taiga Tower by Iola Y.
- Honorable mention: the Tree Village Build by Ben V. It was taken out of grand prize consideration because it mixed blocks from several biomes, but it will still appear.
Mojang says every one of these builds will show up in the movie or its end credits. It has not said where. That makes for a fun thing to look for with a child in the theater, as long as the closing credits do not run past bedtime.
What is still unknown
Mojang has not shared a plot, a trailer, the full cast list or a rating. Watch out for videos and sites that claim a “leaked trailer,” a “full plot” or an early stream. If it is not on minecraft.net or the studio’s channels, assume it is made up. The safest place to check for news is the Minecraft news page at minecraft.net, where both the title and the date were first posted. A trailer or rating will most likely show up there or on the studio’s channels first, and we will update this page when it does.

Parent note
When the rating is published, check it before taking younger kids, since a sequel can rate differently from the first film. The game is a different product with its own rating: Minecraft is rated E10+ by the ESRB.
A big movie brings scams. Expect fake “free tickets” and “early screening” giveaways on social media, and sites that offer to stream the film before it is in theaters. Real tickets come from your local theater or its app. If a giveaway asks a child to log in with a Minecraft or Microsoft account, or to share a card number, it is a scam. Our account security guide explains how these login tricks work, and the advice applies to Microsoft accounts too.
