A modpack is a ready-made bundle of Minecraft mods with settings already tuned to work together. This list ranks packs by how players vote with downloads, using the counts Modrinth shows and the ranking CurseForge published from its own data. All of these are for Java Edition only.

Install modpacks only through the CurseForge app or the Modrinth App. A "modpack download" site or a link in a video description can hide malware. Our safe mod install guide explains why.

How we ranked them

Modrinth publishes a download count on every project. We sorted its modpacks by downloads on October 10, 2026, and list the numbers as they stood that day. They change every hour.

CurseForge does not show the same data in a way we could read automatically. Instead, we use the list CurseForge’s own blog published on November 30, 2025, ranking its top modpacks by community downloads. It gives the order, not the numbers.

We left out two high-ranked Modrinth packs built around zombies and firearms, because this site writes for families.

PackDownloads (Oct 10, 2026)Game versionsWhat it is
Fabulously Optimizedabout 18.3 million26.2 stable, 26.3 alphaFaster performance and graphics options
Cobblemon modpack [Fabric]about 11.2 million1.20.1, 1.21.1Built around the Cobblemon creature-catching mod
COBBLEVERSEabout 7.0 million1.21.1Cobblemon adventure with gyms and badges
Better MC [FABRIC] BMC2about 3.6 million1.20.1Large “vanilla plus” content pack
Vanilla Perfectedabout 2.6 million26.3 stableSmall upgrades that keep the base game’s feel
Prominence IIabout 2.1 million1.20.1RPG with a talent tree and bosses

The top pack is about speed, not new content. Fabulously Optimized describes itself as “beautiful graphics, speedy performance and familiar features in a simple package.” It is a good first install on an older PC, because it changes little about how the game plays.

Vanilla Perfected is the other pack on this list with a stable 26.3 build, so it is the pick if your child wants the newest Wilderness Bound content with a few extras.

Top of CurseForge’s ranking

CurseForge’s November 2025 ranking by community downloads opens with these packs:

  1. RLCraft: hardcore survival with dragons, thirst and temperature (Forge).
  2. Pixelmon Modpack: catching and training creatures (Forge).
  3. Better MC [FORGE] BMC4: a large vanilla-plus pack with more than 320 mods (Forge).
  4. SkyFactory 4: skyblock that starts from a single tree block (Forge).
  5. All the Mods 9: a “kitchen sink” pack with more than 400 mods (Forge).
  6. All the Mods 10: about 500 mods with quests and an endgame (NeoForge, 1.21.1).

CurseForge’s blog calls RLCraft a true test of survival skills, so it is a hard start for younger players. Our picks for a gentler first pack are SkyFactory or one of the Better MC packs.

Picking a pack for your child

  • Match the version. Each pack runs on one Minecraft version and one mod loader, and the launcher installs both for you.
  • Check the size. Packs with hundreds of mods need more memory and a stronger PC. On a low-end laptop, start with Fabulously Optimized or Vanilla Perfected.
  • Read the description for combat, horror and weapons. Modpacks have no ESRB rating, while the base game is rated E10+.
  • Use a separate profile. Launchers install each modpack as its own profile, apart from your child’s normal game.
  • Check multiplayer. Many packs are tagged for multiplayer and are played on servers. Our Minecraft parental controls guide shows how to limit online play.

Installing a modpack

In the CurseForge app, CurseForge’s support page says you browse Modpacks, pick one and select Install, then find it under My Modpacks. The Modrinth App works the same way: search for the pack and install it. Our safe mod install guide covers loaders and malware red flags, and our shaders guide for low-end PCs adds lighting on top.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most downloaded Minecraft modpack on Modrinth?

On October 10, 2026, Modrinth's search sorted by downloads put Fabulously Optimized first, with about 18.3 million downloads. It is a performance and graphics pack, not a content overhaul.

Which modpacks work on Minecraft 26.3?

When we checked, Vanilla Perfected had a stable 26.3 release and Fabulously Optimized had 26.3 alpha builds. Most big content packs on this list still run on older versions such as 1.20.1 or 1.21.1.

Are Minecraft modpacks rated by the ESRB?

No. Modpacks are fan-made and carry no ESRB rating. Read the pack's page for combat, horror or weapon content before your child installs it.

Do modpacks cost money?

The packs on CurseForge and Modrinth are free to download. You still need Minecraft: Java Edition, and modpacks do not work on Bedrock or consoles.
