Mods can turn Minecraft into a new game, but they are also the easiest way for a family PC to pick up malware. This guide sticks to two hosts, CurseForge and Modrinth, explains mod loaders in plain terms, and shows what Bedrock players use instead.

Never download a mod from a link in a video description, a Discord message or a "mod pack download" site. Get every mod through CurseForge or Modrinth, and never run an .exe file that claims to be a Minecraft mod.

Java mods vs Bedrock add-ons

Mods are made for Minecraft: Java Edition on Windows, macOS and Linux. Bedrock Edition, which runs on consoles, phones and Windows, does not load Java mods. Bedrock has add-ons instead, sold in the Marketplace inside the game. Minecraft describes them as packs that add custom blocks, items, mobs and recipes to your worlds.

If your child plays on a console or tablet, the Marketplace is the only route we recommend. Add-ons cost Minecoins, so read our Minecoins and Marketplace guide and turn on purchase approval first. Not sure which edition you have? Our Java vs Bedrock guide explains how to tell.

Pick a host: CurseForge or Modrinth

Both sites host thousands of mods and give each one a project page with versions, loaders and a changelog. Both also have a free launcher app that installs mods for you:

SystemsWindows, macOS, LinuxWindows, macOS, Linux

Using the launcher app is safer than downloading files by hand, because the app pulls each mod from the host and matches the loader and game version for you. CurseForge’s support page says its app installs the correct loader (Forge, Fabric or NeoForge) when you install a modpack. Modrinth describes its app as an open source launcher that keeps your mods up to date.

Understand mod loaders

A mod loader is the piece that lets Java Edition run mods. Modrinth lists four common ones: Fabric, NeoForge, Forge and Quilt. Every mod page names the loader and game versions it supports. A Fabric mod will not run on NeoForge, and a mod made for an older version usually breaks on a new one.

New game versions take time. Minecraft: Java Edition 26.3 came out on September 15, 2026. When we checked on October 10, Fabric already listed stable support for 26.3, while NeoForge’s 26.3 builds were still marked beta. If a mod you want is not updated yet, play the older version it supports. The Minecraft Launcher lets you pick an older version in a new installation.

Install a mod step by step

  1. Install the CurseForge app or the Modrinth App from curseforge.com or modrinth.com, not from a mirror site.
  2. Open the app and create a new profile or instance. Choose the game version and loader the mod needs.
  3. Search for the mod inside the app and check the author, download count and last update date.
  4. Click Install. The app adds the mod and anything it depends on.
  5. Launch the game from the app. Start a new test world before loading a world you care about.
  6. Back up important worlds first. Some mods change world files, and removing them later can break a save.

How to spot a dangerous mod

The fractureiser investigation, run by community volunteers, found malware in June 2023 inside several Minecraft projects uploaded to CurseForge and BukkitDev. Some of those mods had been added to popular modpacks. It targeted Windows and Linux. The team says the event has ended, but it showed that a big host is not a guarantee.

Red flags to teach your child:

  • A mod file that ends in .exe, or a “mod installer” that is not the CurseForge or Modrinth app.
  • A .jar file sent in a video description, a comment or a private message.
  • A brand-new project that copies the name of a popular mod.
  • Any mod or tool that asks for a Microsoft account password.
  • Offers of “free Minecoins” or unlocked Marketplace items. Those are scams, the same kind as our guide to free-Robux scams describes.

If your child already ran a suspicious file, run a full antivirus scan and change the Microsoft account password from a different, clean device. Our Roblox account security guide lists the same recovery steps.

Where to go next

Once mods work, modpacks bundle many mods with settings already chosen. Our Minecraft modpacks guide lists popular packs by download count, and our shaders guide for low-end PCs covers lighting packs that run on older computers.

Frequently asked questions

Are Minecraft mods safe?

Most mods on large hosts are fine, but not all. In 2023 the fractureiser malware was found in several projects uploaded to CurseForge and BukkitDev. Stick to well-known mods, keep your antivirus on and avoid files from video descriptions.

Can you get mods on Bedrock or console?

Not Java mods. Bedrock uses add-ons instead, and the safe place to get them is the Marketplace inside the game, which sells add-ons that add blocks, items and mobs.

What is a mod loader?

A mod loader is a small program that lets Java Edition run mods. The common ones are Fabric, NeoForge, Forge and Quilt. A mod only works with the loader and game version it was made for.

Do mods work on Minecraft 26.3?

Some do. When we checked on October 10, 2026, Fabric listed stable support for 26.3 and NeoForge's 26.3 builds were still in beta. Each mod also has to be updated for 26.3 by its author.
