Vibrant Visuals is Minecraft’s graphics upgrade with moving shadows, reflective water and light rays. It came to Bedrock Edition in June 2025, and Java players have been asking when it will reach them ever since. This guide sums up what Mojang has said and shipped so far, without guessing at dates it has not given.
What Vibrant Visuals is
Mojang revealed Vibrant Visuals at Minecraft LIVE in March 2025. It adds lighting that changes with the sun, shadows from blocks, reflective water, infinite-looking clouds and light rays. Mojang says it is a cosmetic upgrade only. It does not change gameplay, so existing worlds work with it, and friends can play together online whether they have it on or off.
It launched on Bedrock with the Chase the Skies drop on June 17, 2025. It is free and comes with the game update.
Where it works today: Bedrock Edition
Mojang’s Vibrant Visuals page lists these Bedrock devices:
| Device | Requirement listed by Mojang |
|---|---|
| Windows PC | Running Minecraft on DirectX 12 |
| Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One | Supported |
| PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 | Supported |
| Android | Adreno 640, Mali-G68, Mali-G77, Xclipse 530 or higher graphics |
| iPhone and iPad | A12 or M1 chip or newer |
On supported devices it becomes the default graphics mode. To switch it on or off, go to Settings, then Video, then Graphics Mode. You can also pick a “Favor Visuals” or “Favor Performance” preset. Split screen does not support it, so the game falls back to Fancy or Simple graphics when a second player joins on the same console.
If your family plays on a Windows PC, the PC version of Minecraft includes both editions. Our Java vs Bedrock guide explains that bundle. A Java player can open Bedrock on the same PC to see the new look today.
Mojang’s plan for Java
In April 2025, Mojang laid out three steps for Java:
- Refactor the code, separating gameplay code from rendering code.
- Build a modern rendering pipeline on top of that.
- Add the new visual effects.
Mojang said improvements would ship “as soon as they’re ready,” first in snapshots and then in full releases, on Windows, Mac and Linux. It also warned that players with less common graphics cards or old drivers may see bugs or crashes during testing.
In February 2026, Mojang said it was “still hard at work” and announced the next step: moving Java from OpenGL, a graphics system from the 1990s, to Vulkan. OpenGL is being deprecated on macOS, and Mojang says Vulkan gives it the room it needs for Vibrant Visuals. Mac players will run Vulkan through a translation layer.
The Vulkan switch so far
| Build | Date | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| Java 26.2 Snapshot 8 | May 19, 2026 | OpenGL is the default, Vulkan is marked “Experimental” |
| Java 26.4 Snapshot 1 | September 22, 2026 | Vulkan becomes the default; “Default” now means “Prefer Vulkan” |
During testing, players can switch between OpenGL and Vulkan. Mojang says it will remove OpenGL only once Vulkan is stable, and that players will get advance notice and updated minimum requirements before that happens.
What it means for your family’s PC
- Old graphics cards. Mojang notes that Vulkan may not work on GPUs that are 10 or more years old. If Java gets slow or crashes in a snapshot, that is a likely reason.
- Mods. Mods that draw with OpenGL will need updates for Vulkan, and Mojang expects that to take mod authors longer than a normal version update. Wait for your child’s favorite mods to update before moving to the new version.
- Snapshots. Testing builds can damage worlds. Keep important worlds out of snapshots, or back them up first.
Graphics upgrades also bring fake downloads. Sites offering a “Vibrant Visuals for Java” file or shader pack that asks for a Microsoft login, a payment or an .exe file are not Mojang. Mojang delivers it through the normal game update, so treat anything else as a scam and see our account security guide. Minecraft is rated E10+ by the ESRB, and Vibrant Visuals does not change what is in the game.

Frequently asked questions
Is Vibrant Visuals on Java Edition yet?
Not as of October 10, 2026. Mojang says it plans to bring it to Java and is rebuilding Java's graphics code first. It has not given a release date.
Which edition has Vibrant Visuals now?
Bedrock Edition, since the Chase the Skies drop on June 17, 2025. It runs on Windows, Xbox, PlayStation 4 and 5, and supported Android and iOS devices.
What does Vulkan have to do with Vibrant Visuals?
Vulkan is the new graphics system Java is moving to, replacing OpenGL. Mojang calls the switch an important step toward Vibrant Visuals on Java. In the 26.4 snapshots, Vulkan is now the default.
Will my child's mods break?
Some might. Mojang warned that mods that use OpenGL for rendering will need updates for Vulkan, and that those updates will take mod authors longer than usual.
Does Vibrant Visuals change gameplay?
No. Mojang says it is a cosmetic upgrade only, so worlds and Realms work the same whether a player has it on or off.
