Kids who love Roblox usually love one of three things about it: building, playing with friends, or trying lots of small games. Each game below covers at least one of those. We list the ESRB rating and price model for each, because those two facts decide most family conversations.
The comparison table
| Game | Platforms | Price model | ESRB rating | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minecraft | PC, consoles, phones | One-time purchase; optional Marketplace and Realms | E10+ | Kids who mostly want to build |
| Fortnite Creative | Fortnite on PC and consoles | Free; V-Bucks for cosmetics | T | Trying many player-made games, like Roblox |
| LEGO Fortnite Odyssey | Inside Fortnite | Free inside Fortnite | E10+ | Younger Fortnite players who like survival-building |
| Terraria | PC (Windows, Mac, Linux), PS4, Xbox One, Switch, iOS | One-time purchase | T | Exploring, digging and boss fights |
| Stardew Valley | PC, Xbox One, PS4, Switch, iOS, Android | One-time purchase | E10+ | Calm farming and co-op with friends |
How to read the table: “Price model” tells you whether the first payment is the last one, and the ESRB column tells you the content level of the base game. Neither covers games made by other players or servers run by strangers, so the chat and account settings still matter. A one-time price also does not mean no extra spending: Minecraft sells Marketplace content and Realms on top of the base game.
PC prices in October 2026: Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition $29.99 on the Microsoft Store; Terraria $9.99 and Stardew Valley $14.99 on Steam. Console and phone prices differ, and stores run sales.
Minecraft: the building pick
Minecraft is the obvious first stop. It is rated E10+ for Fantasy Violence. Single-player worlds work offline, and multiplayer can stay inside a private Realm. If your child is choosing between the two, read our Minecraft vs Roblox comparison for parents, then pick an edition with our Java vs Bedrock guide. Spending happens through Minecoins on the Marketplace, which we explain in Minecoins and the Marketplace.
Fortnite Creative and LEGO Fortnite: the Roblox-style hub
Fortnite Creative works most like Roblox: players browse islands made by other players and hop between them. The ESRB rates Fortnite T for Teen with a Diverse Content: Discretion Advised notice, because islands made by other players cover many maturity levels. Its parent guide notes you can limit a child to experiences rated E10+ and below.
LEGO Fortnite Odyssey runs inside Fortnite and carries its own E10+ rating for Fantasy Violence. It is free, but your child still uses a Fortnite account, so Epic’s parental controls are where you set chat and purchase limits. Teens who want to build their own islands can read our Fortnite Creative and UEFN guide.
Terraria: the explorer’s pick
Terraria is a 2D sandbox where you dig, build and fight bosses. The ESRB rates it T for Blood and Gore, Cartoon Violence, Mild Suggestive Themes and alcohol references, so it suits older kids. It is a one-time purchase with no Robux-style currency. Our Terraria beginner’s guide covers the first nights.
Stardew Valley: the calm pick
Stardew Valley is a farming game you can play alone or in co-op with friends. The ESRB rates it E10+ for Fantasy Violence, Mild Blood, Mild Language, Simulated Gambling and Use of Alcohol and Tobacco. If the “Simulated Gambling” descriptor worries you, the ESRB page lists it so you can decide before buying. Start with our Stardew Valley beginner’s guide.
Staying on Roblox instead?
If your child mostly wants different kinds of games, Roblox itself may already have them: see Roblox games by genre. For spending, stick to the legit ways to get Robux and ignore any site promising free currency, which is how accounts get stolen. Our Roblox parents’ guide covers the controls.
