A private server is a copy of a Roblox game that only you and the people you choose can join. Kids use them to play with friends without strangers, to grind in peace, or to build something in a quieter world.
This guide covers what they cost, how Roblox Plus changes the math, how to set one up and share it, and the settings parents should know about.
What a private server is
When you join a game normally, Roblox drops you into a public server with whoever else is playing. A private server is a separate server for that game that you control. You decide who can join: individual players, your friends list, or anyone who has the link you share.
Not every game offers them. The game’s creator has to turn private servers on, so if you do not see the option on a game page, that game simply does not have them.
What a private server costs
The creator sets the price, in Robux, and the amounts vary a lot from game to game. Some creators make private servers free by turning off the Robux requirement.
When a server has a price, it works like a subscription:
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| First purchase | You pay the price in Robux to start the server |
| Every month | The same amount comes out of your Robux balance on the same date |
| Not enough Robux at renewal | The server expires |
| You cancel | You keep access until the expiration date, then it stops |
If you are watching a Robux budget, our cheapest way to buy Robux guide compares the packs.
Roblox Plus and free private servers
Roblox Plus, the subscription that replaced Premium in April 2026, includes free private servers among its benefits. Since September 24, 2026, that means one free private server per game. Any extra free servers you had in a game expire, and private servers you paid for separately are not affected.
If you have Plus and get an error when creating a server, Roblox’s help center lists two common causes: you already have a free private server for that game, or you have reached the limit on active free servers. Deactivating an existing free server lets you create a new one. Our Roblox Premium and Plus guide covers the rest of the subscription.
How to create a private server
- Open the game’s page on the Roblox website or app.
- Scroll to the Servers section near the bottom and find Private Servers.
- Click Create Private Server.
- Give the server a name.
- Read the subscription agreement and confirm with Buy Now.
How to invite friends and share it
After the server exists, open its three-dot menu on the game page and choose Configure. From there you can:
- rename the server
- choose who can play: up to 50 individual users, or your whole friends list
- create a link that lets other people join
A link is the easiest way to bring a group together, but treat it like a house key and share it only with people you know. Players who are allowed in see the server listed under Private Servers on the game page and can play from there.
To stop paying, click the three-dot menu next to the server, choose Cancel, then Yes, cancel. The server keeps working until its expiration date, which is shown on the Configure page.
Private server safety for kids
Private servers can be the safest way for a young child to play, because only invited people get in. Roblox also builds in some limits by default:
- Players under 13 can only join private servers owned by their friends.
- Only their friends can join a private server they own.
- Privacy settings can restrict this further.
Parents with a linked account can change this in Settings → Parental Controls → Settings you manage → Visibility & private servers → Private Servers, choosing Friends or Off. If you have not linked your account yet, our Roblox parents guide walks through it.
Two habits help:
- Keep the friend list to people your child knows offline.
- Treat a private server invite from a stranger like any other message from a stranger. Our account security guide lists the common tricks.
Quick troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely reason |
|---|---|
| No Private Servers section | The creator has not turned them on |
| Error when creating (Plus member) | You already have a free server in that game, or hit the active free-server limit |
| Server disappeared | It expired because the balance was short at renewal, or it was cancelled |
| A friend can’t join | Their age or privacy settings, or they are not on the server’s allowed list |
